CMC Autumn Seminar #2: Discourses of populism and generative music

October 16, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm IST

Melissa Avdeeff and Tadeo Vazquez Sanchez apply aspects of discourse analysis to AI Generative Music and Populist political figures.

Tadeo Vazquez Sanchez:

Populist radical right (PRR) parties have significantly increased their presence and electoral support throughout Europe, attracting considerable attention in the literature. One concern has been what happens after the electoral breakthroughs, when they gain parliamentary representation and, ultimately, government participation. However, the focus has been more on party agendas and stances and less on how party leaders construct their discourses. PRR discourses can foster political extremism and negative attitudes towards immigrants and contribute to political unrest and mistrust of liberal democracy. This research wants to redirect the focus to the discourses of the PRR and how its leaders moderate and radicalise their discursive construction, sometimes even diverging from their own parties.

Social media has been increasingly researched as a critical channel for political communication and discourse, and there is a multiplicity of studies on discourse on both social and traditional media. However, most studies do not integrate both to understand political discourse in a hybrid media system, and comparative studies are rare in the literature. This research aims to study Twitter/X, Facebook, and TV interviews to understand how PRR discursive construction works across media settings.

Moreover, populism dominates most studies on PRR discourse, while nativist and authoritarian narratives appear in a secondary position. This research takes a systematic, organised approach to untangle the complexities in their discursive constructions and understand how nativism, authoritarianism, and populism manifest discursively.
